After 5 long years of campaigning by Robert L Shaw, Stettler was able to break from the Wetaskiwin Judical District and become a sub-district in 1913.

In December of 1913 steps were put into place to purchase the former school house to become the first courthouse in Stettler.

Renovations began in March of 1914 on the two story building, thinking this would be temporary until a new one could be built. It would fit a basic layout of courthouses of the era. The first floor would house offices for officers of the court, as well as an office for the judge, and two holding cells. The second floor would have the main court room, lawyers’ chambers and a retiring room for juries and witnesses.

Although a new modern furnace was installed, most of the fixtures were from the former Territorial Courthouse in Calgary, which was being refitted into the new headquarters of the North West Mounted Police, originally built in 1888. So if these walls could talk, and let's hope they do, imagine the stories!

The courthouse was ready in September of 1914 with much of the labour and subcontract work done by local outfits. Local names would also be some of the first officials to work in the new courthouse. So maybe some of you have had stories passed down to you about the courthouse.

After the war, Stettler’s roughly 1,200 people were not enough to warrant the construction of a new courthouse. By 1935, the judicial sub-district of Stettler was dissolved. Stettler had just enough traffic to maintain local officials and offices.

In the mid-seventies, a provincial building was erected with a courtroom inside, and Stettler’s ‘temporary’ courthouse was officially closed. The massive two storey structure was then moved across town and currently sits at the Stettler museum.

Stettler Hotel April 2019

In the spring of 1906, Carl Stettler built the National Hotel on the site of the present Stettler Hotel. This hotel burned down in 1908 and he started to build another, the National Hotel, on the same site in 1909. The hotel was only partly built when he sold his interest to R.L. Shaw who completed the hotel (pictured below). In 1942 The National hotel burned down and was replaced by the Stettler Hotel in 1948

After speaking with the current owner of The Stettler Hotel she was able to tell some of the things happening in the building.

The basement:

Used as a headquarters while trying to apprehend Robert Raymond Cook after his escape. Can you imagine this area and the emotions that were here? To this day some people adamantly swear Robert was innocent. Was he and did they send an innocent man to his death? Orbs have been caught down here.

2nd Floor:

Room 222 has had water turned on in the bathtub, a resident has reported piano music being played in the middle of the night. The owner is a piano teacher but does not use the studio on the 2nd floor during the night. An apparition of a woman in white was seen by an liquor inspector, guess he found the boo's!

3rd Floor:

3 dissembodied heads of men that looked like from the 20's or 30's were seen by the current owner. Knocks and other noises have been heard, settling of an old building or something else?

After the investigation stay awhile, have a drink and discuss the evening! The hotel offers many snacks for you to purchase as well, see the attached menu!
